Frequently asked questions
Learn about Goodbill, hospital bills, negotiation, and more.
How does it really work?
The process is simple. First, you authorize us to get your billing records from your hospital so you don't have to deal with the headache. Then, once you enter your insurance and medical record information, we're off! Our software and experts will analyze your hospital bill for coding errors and pricing discrepancies, and then negotiate to save you money.

How does Goodbill make money?
We only make money if we save you money.
If we win your negotiation, we charge 20% of the money we save you. For example, if we save you $1,000, you'll pay us $200 and keep the remaining $800 in savings. We'll never charge you more than $1,000, no matter how much we save you. And, if we don't find you any savings, you pay nothing. It's completely risk-free.

Shouldn't I get to keep all my savings?
We’d like that! But running a business like this costs money, so we give you as much of your savings as we possibly can.

Where do you get the data that lets you do this?
Our trained medical coders have reviewed thousands of hospital bills and know how to spot coding errors — such as when a patient gets charged for a procedure they shouldn't have.
We also analyze hospital pricing data to make sure your prices are correct and fair. Hospitals must publish prices for everything they charge for, including what they charge insurance companies, thanks to federal regulations that took effect in January 2021. However, that data isn't always consumer-friendly, so we crunch those numbers for you.

Does Goodbill only help with hospital bills?
For now, yes. As Americans, we spend around $100 billion of our own money per year (not counting what your insurance or financial aid organizations pay) across over 5,000 hospitals, so we have our work cut out for us.
If you have another type of bill you'd like help with, email us at support@goodbill.com and we'll see what we can do.

I have insurance. Do I need Goodbill?
Yes! Even if you have amazing health insurance, it's very likely you'll pay for some of your bill out of your own pocket. We can help keep that low and help you understand your bill along the way.

I'm uninsured. Can you really do anything to help?
Yes! Even if you’re uninsured, there are financial aid programs you might qualify for to reduce or erase your bill. We’ll make sure you’re only paying what’s fair for your situation, and help you understand your bill along the way.

I already paid my bill. Can Goodbill still help?
We only support hospital bills that haven't been paid yet. While it's possible to recover overpayment from hospitals, it's more difficult and a process we don't currently support.
